SUSTAINABILITY IN THE PRIVATE MARKETS
In the last 10 years, there has been a sharp rise in ESG & Sustainability searches for Investment Banking & Private Markets Investors.
We ask, Managing Partner, Will Invine, about hiring in this space, the skillsets clients look for and the challenges they face when building these teams.
SKILLSETS IN DEMAND
On the sponsor side, our clients are looking for candidates that have invested in companies that our supporting energy transition and decarbonisation. Areas of the market such as Hydrogen, Carbon Capture and Battery Storage are in demand as well as more traditional renewables experience. For these strategies, our sponsor clients are often targeting ‘Private Equity style’ rates of return and have a preference for hiring candidates that have Private Equity and / or ventures experience.
For Investment Banks and Advisory firms, candidates with Sustainable Finance (across bonds and loans) and Environmental Consulting backgrounds are in demand. There is also a demand for candidates looking to move to (or return to) Investment Banking from a buy side role. Investment Banking teams work heavily with sponsor clients and having someone who has investments experience provides great insight and perspective.
CHALLENGES FACED BY CLIENTS HIRING IN THESE AREAS
Clients hiring for ESG & Sustainability focused roles have to be creative. There is no trodden path and often the candidates we place into these roles have no prior experience in Investment Banking or Private Equity. It is crucial therefore that clients think strategically about what candidates will need when they join for a successful onboarding. A thorough assessment of cultural fit and ensuring potential candidates truly understand the demands and pace of the sector is also of paramount importance.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE?
Being able to balance a passion for sustainability with commercial realities. You are being hired to either generate revenue or drive greater performance. If a candidate truly understands and has a flair for both, they are in a great spot!
